Harish Chandra Golecha Memorial squash

Promising youngster Surabhi Mishra pipped Shivangee Paranjpe in a tough battle to take home the Under-17 girls’ title at the the All India Harish Chandra Golecha Memorial squash tournament here. Surabhi prevailed 9-5 8-10 9-10 9-5 9-3 in the final at the Jai Club today. In the boys’ Under-15 category, Ravi Dixit beat Karan Mallik 10-8 11-9 9-7 9-4 to lift the title.

Earlier in the men’s section, top seed Ritwik Bhattacharya took about half an hour to demolish the challenge of Naresh Kumar 9-2 9-1 9-4, while Gaurav Nandrajog subdued Partha Sharma 9-2 9-4 9-1 to sail into the final. The title clash will be a repeat of the previous edition of the tournament when Gaurav was looking good for a victory before the country’s top player had to resign to ward off any injury ahead of an important outing in Kolkata.

Gaurav has also beaten Ritwik in the semifinals of the nationals at Delhi a few days back and hopes to repeat the performance. When asked if he had caught any loopholes in Ritwik’s game, a smiling Gaurav replied “it might be so”.

The girls’ under-17 final was a gruelling affair. Surabhi had beaten Shivangee in the nationals and also in the semifinal of the women’s section here but Shivangee fought hard here. Riding on local support, Surabhi won the first game 9-5 but Shivangee came back roaring to win the second 10-8 and shot into 2-1 lead after winning the third. Sensing the danger, Surabhi put all her might to win the fourth 9-5 and her powerful shots and deft placements rocked Shivangee who could not match her rival in the decider.
