Junior Nationals 2008 – Quarterfinals

 There were a handful of upsets in the younger age groups at the junior national squash championships here in Chennai on quarterfinal day. 9 out of a total of 40 match played today saw the ‘underdog’ goining through.

In the boys under 11 category, A. Rishdev seeded 5/8 from Chennai defeated 3/4 ranked Yohann Surti in 4 close games. Rishidev played some delightful drives and drops keeping Yohann always on the run winning in straight games. Robin Mann from Delhi who ousted second seed Sandeep Paswan from Maharasthra yesterday won once again in four games against Velavan from Chennai.
In boys under 13, 3/4 seeded Yohan Pandole was unable to keep up the speed and retreviving power of Sandeep Ramachandran continuing his winning streek while Abhimanyu Shah from Maharastra defeated state mate and higher ranked Aditya Khatri in straight games.
In the boys under 15, Vrishabh Kotian came up with the match of his life as he fought back from 2 games down against higher ranked Karan Thahryamal from Rajashtan. Vrishab lost the first easily but in the second games both players were levelled at 10-10 with Karan edging him out 13-11. A huge comback in the third and fought gave Vrishabh the confidence against a tyring Karan. In the end, Vrishab had 4 matchballs and converted it after 2 points. A great result from Vrishab having shifted from Mumbai to Chennai 6months ago.  Delhi based Deepak Mishra outplayed Mumbai’s Caran Arora in the quartefianl in staright games.
The girls under 11 saw both Tamilnadu girls, Shamika Reddy & Neharika Balamurukan seeded 3/4 going down to Rayna Kishanchandani and Jui Kalgutar respectively. And Tanvi Jain defeated Rinki Soni in the girls under 17 category.
