DNA – Indian Squash looking up

Indian women’s squash has been on a high in recent times with both Joshna Chinappa and Dipika Pallikal clinching WISPA titles in the last two monthsThe latest came on Sunday when Joshna Chinappa won the German Ladies Open title in Saarbrucken.  This is Joshna’s first WISPA title on the European tour. Indian squash coach Cyrus Poncha reiterated the fact saying, “It is a great win for her she had won WISPA tournaments before but all been in Malaysia. It is a great achievement for her and you can see hard work is paying off.”

Dipika also recently clinched her maiden WISPA title at the WISPA Indian Challenger No 5 in Kolkata beating Emma Beddoes 3-1 in the summit clash. Poncha was full of praise for the youngster. “Dipika also recently won her first WISPA tournament now her next big test is within a month at the world junior girls’ championship in Germany.”

The duo have also been playing doubles together and won gold at the International Doubles Championship in Manchester defeating Donna Urquhart and Kasey Brown (10) of Australia 11-10 3-11 11-10. They also knocked out their higher ranked opponents and top seeds and world No. 3 England’s Jenny Duncalf and Alison Waters 6-11 11-8 11-4 for a place in the summit round.

Looking ahead for the Commonwealth games (CWG) later this year, Poncha said, “The girls not also did exceedingly well in the Asian championship only missing out in the final to Hong Kong. In a build up to the CWG, they won their doubles title beating top English players.” There is still some time left for the CWG that starts on October 3 in New Delhi and Poncha was optimistic, “We have the potential to win and I hope we can make it work during the CWG.”
