34th National Games, Dhanbad (14-18 Feb ’11)

Squash made it maiden appearance at the national games 2011 in which Tamil Nadu dominated proceedings winning 5 out of 8 medals at stake.

Harinder Pal Singh Sandhu (TN) & Aparajitha Balamurukan(TN) were victorious brining home the gold medals in the men’s and women’s events respectively.

Aparajitha the second seed upsets top seeded Anwesha Reddy (TN) in a nail biting five-set match. Aparajitha was on the verge of defeat as she saved 2 match points being 2 games and 8-10 down in the third game. A remarkable fight back from Aparajitha enabled her to pressurise Anwesha drawing the errors from her. In the end Aparajitha took control and won the match in style.

In the Men’s final, Harinder dominated the proceedings apart from dropping the second game against state mate Ravi Dixit. Ravi tried his level best to pull off his second upset in the event after defeating Sandeep Jangra in the semi finals. That was not to be as Harinder won the next two games convincingly.

Bronze medals

Sandeep Jangra (Services) & Vikas Jangra (Services)

Women’s Gold Medal

Aparajitha Balamurukan (2), Tamil Nadu, def. Anwesha Reddy (1), Tamil Nadu, 3-11 2-11 13-11 11-5 11-7 .

Bronze medals

Lakaysha Ragavendran (TN) & Anadita Gupta (MP)
