39th Maharashtra State Junior (4-7 Sept’14)

Top seeds Megha Bhatia, Vivaan Shah and fourth seed Aryaman Adik snatched thrilling deciders to emerge champions, in the 39th Bombay Gymkhana Maharashtra State Open Junior Squash Championship a 3 star SRFI event. 

Vivaan Shah kicked off an exciting day of championship rounds that also saw four other top seeds upset when he endured a late challenge to overcome second seed Yuvraj Wadhwani after leading 2-0, for the under-9 crown.

Megha Bhatia of Delhi also lived dangerously against second seed Jannia Singh of Chandigarh after rallying from 1-2 to snatch the decider at 15-13 for the girls under-13 title, in the most gripping finish.

Aryaman Adik of Maharashtra also rallied from 1-2 to stun top seed Abhay Singh of Tamil Nadu to help himself to the boys under-17 title.

In other finals, girls under-15 top seed Aakanksha Rao lost to second seed Diya Joukani, girls under-17 top seed Aishwarya Bhattacharya of Maharashtra went down to second seed Akanksha Salunkhe of Goa and boys under-19 top seed Aishwarya Singh lost to fourth seed Yohan Pandole.

Maharashtra trio Aakash Gupta, Aishwarya Khubchandani and Chaitanya Shah and Yash Fadte of Goa were the other top seeds who won their respective titles and lived up to their reputations.


U-9: 1-Vivaan Shah bt 2-Yuvraj Wadhwani 11-5,11-4, 9-11, 6-11, 11-7.

Boys U-11: 1-Aakash Gupta bt Jeh Pandole 11-7, 11-7, 11-9.

Girls U-11: 1-Aishwarya Khubchandani bt 2-Yuvna Gupta 11-3, 11-6, 9-11, 11-2.

Boys U-13: 1-Yash Fadte (Goa) bt 2-Neel Joshi 11-9, 11-5, 11-5.

Girls U-13: 1-Megha Bhatia bt 2-Jannia Singh (Chd) 8-11, 11-9, 8-11,11-7, 15-13.

Boys U-15: 1-Chaitanya Shah bt Tushar Shahani 11-8, 11-6, 11-5.

Girls U-15: 2-Diya Joukani bt 1-Aakanksha Rao 11-7, 11-7, 11-6.

Boys U-17: Aryaman Adik bt 1-Abhay Singh (TN) 8-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-4, 11-7.

Girls U-17: 2-Akanksha Salunkhe (Goa) bt 1-Aishwarya Bhattacharya 11-7, 11-6, 11-7.

Boys U-19: Yohan Pandole bt 1-Aishwarya Singh 11-8, 13-11, 11-9.
