Malaysian 2016 Tour 1 (28 -31 Mar’16)

Ever since he tasted title-success in December2015 in the Florida Open, Vikram Malhotra has been an inspired man. The US-based player then almost grabbed another by reaching the final at the Seattle Open early last month.

The tall lad has been enjoying his squash and this much came through as he brought up another good show later in the month to lift the title in the Malaysian tour-leg one which was held in Malaka. The Indian who touched his career high ranking of 92 this month was seeded five in this $5000 event.

A win over Tsz Kwan Lau of Hong Kong (11-8, 11-7, 6-11, 11-9) was the starter as Vikram grew in confidence to topple the second seeded Malaysian Muhd Asyraf Azan 11-9, 11-5, 8-11, 11-8 in the quarterfinal next. Incidentally Azan had ended another Indian Ravi Dixit’s outing in the first round (13-11, 11-6, 11-5). Third seed Ben Grindrod of England was his next victim as the Indian cruised ahead with a better looking 11-5, 11-8, 11-3 win.

Vikram showed the right mix of aggression and caution to wear down the eighth seed Eain Yow Ng of Malaysia. The winning scores were 13-11, 11-9, 11-5 as the Indian cornered glory in just 33 minutes. It is a measure of Vikram’s growing stature that Eain admitted after his defeat that he had lost to a much better and experienced player.
